The number one question asked of an interior designer is “how do I begin?”
And the answer to that usually sounds like this. “ Oh…I’d start with a rug…maybe a beautiful old Oushak with its sun-faded colors asking to be picked up on all over the room…or maybe you have an incredible painting that needs a soft palette to guarantee it stands out…or you’ve inherited masses of books calling for a richly paneled room…or you just found an old Chinese lacquer armoire that must be in just the right place, and which will need strong patterns to hold up to the red lacquer…or the loveliest bolt of pale blue linen is on sale…or you’ve a collection of shells, small silver boxes, Chinese porcelain, etc. that you can build around… And that’s a lot of incredibly useful information, isn’t it? Makes one want to run away from this whole concept of furnishing the nest, and live in the most minimalistic, bare bones, beige world possible. For, in truth, many of us don’t have a lot to begin with, and we really could use some concrete ideas to help us determine what to buy, borrow, or acquire. And so, once again, HOW AND WHERE DO I BEGIN?
